Delhi, Mumbai on IMD heat wave alert as sweltering heat grips several states; mercury peak at 47.6 °C | Today’s news

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for several states, including Telangana, Odisha, parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. As India has to contend with sweltering heat, these states are likely to witness “brutal” heat conditions today. The Met Office has also warned of heat conditions in other states, issuing orange and yellow alerts for them.

Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are on orange alert on May 26. Brahmapuri in Maharashtra recorded one of the highest maximum temperatures of 47.6°C in all of India on Monday. With both Delhi and Mumbai on yellow heat wave alert, the IMD in its latest weather bulletin dated May 25 said, “Heat wave to heat wave is likely to continue over central and northwest India during the next 4-5 days; eastern and adjoining peninsular India during the next 3-4 days.”

Heat wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of the following states:

Additionally, hot and humid weather is likely over Saurashtra and Kutch till May 28; Konkan and Goa on 26 May; Gangetic West Bengal till May 27; Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till May 29.

A warm night is likely to prevail in isolated pockets over Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana on May 26 and Vidarbha, Odisha by May 27, the IMD added.

When to expect relief from the heat conditions?

According to the meteorological agency, the heat wave is expected to subside from May 29, but Rajasthan may reel under the heat wave for a longer period. “Reduction in maximum temperatures and easing of heat conditions is likely from May 29 onwards over the entire central and adjoining northern peninsula, eastern and northwestern India, except some parts of Rajasthan,” an IMD press release said.

On the progress of Southwest Monsoon, the IMD said, “Isolated heavy to very rainfall likely over Northeast India during the next 6-7 days and over Kerala and Tamil Nadu during the next 2-3 days.”

Forecasting mainly clear skies, the IMD said: “Sweltering heat very likely to prevail during May 26-27. Warm night conditions likely during May 25-26. No major change in maximum temperatures till May 27, 2026 and then drop by 7-8°C.”
