Delhi-NCR is bracing for a change in weather conditions on Thursday, May 28, after days of unrelenting heat wave with temperatures constantly hovering in the dangerous range of 44-46 degrees Celsius.

Light to very light rain is expected in the afternoon and evening, accompanied by strong winds and gusts of 20 to 40 km/h, the weather agency said.

The weather in Delhi will drop sharply

A more significant and sharp drop in mercury is expected on Friday, May 29. The IMD has forecast the maximum temperature to drop to around 36°C and the minimum to around 26°C, marking the first major respite from the mid-40s that dominated the week.

Thunderstorms with rain are likely along with winds of 40-50 km/h, as well as the possibility of lightning and thunderstorms.

“Overcast skies. Fluctuations of very light rain to light rain accompanied by a thunderstorm/lightning/dust storm and 60-70 km/h gusty winds gusting to 80 km/h in the morning to mid-morning,” the forecast said. “Another spell of very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms/lightning and gusty winds of 40-50km/h gusting to 60km/h during the afternoon to evening.”

Rainy conditions due to thunderstorms are expected to continue, with maximum temperatures likely to remain in a comfortable range of 35°C to 36°C and minimum temperatures between 25°C to 26°C on 30 and 31 May.

Relief in hot conditions

Delhi, sweltering under heatwave-like conditions, will see a change in temperature from Thursday, which the weather agency has partly attributed to a fresh western disturbance.

This atmospheric system, which is likely to affect northwest India from May 28 onwards, often acts as a cooler counterbalance to the extreme summer heat in the plains and is expected to bring significant changes in the regional climate starting today.

“Relief in heat conditions over the region is likely due to probable western disturbance along with invasion of moisture from Bay of Bengal due to likely formation of lower tropospheric easterly trough,” the IMD said.
