Weather Forecast: IMD issues red alert for coastal Karnataka, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Delhi, UP, Haryana | Today’s news

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rain activities in several parts of India from June 9 onwards. Despite the relief from rain, heat waves will continue to plague parts of northwest and central India. The Met office has also issued a ‘red alert’ for coastal Karnataka including Dakshina Kannada and Udupi amid predictions of extremely heavy rainfall in the next two days.

Red alert for coastal Karnataka

Uttara Kannada is also expected to experience heavy rainfall amid the onset of monsoon in the region. Gusts of 40-50 km/h are likely along the coast, with rough sea conditions expected. As a result, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea.

Between 9 and 14 June, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over northeastern states such as Assam and Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Similar conditions are expected over Kerala, Lakshadweep and coastal Karnataka during the same period. Telangana is also likely to experience widespread rainfall between June 9 and 11.

The Met Office has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya from June 9 to 14 and Arunachal Pradesh between June 9 and 14. Heavy rainfall is expected over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during the same period. In eastern India, heavy rainfall is forecast over Bihar between 10 and 12 June, Odisha on 11 and 12 June and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from 10 to 13 June. Very heavy rainfall is also expected over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on June 9.

Among the southern states, heavy rainfall is expected over Kerala and Mahe between 9 and 12 June, while coastal Karnataka may experience heavy showers from 12 to 14 June. North Interior Karnataka is likely to experience heavy rainfall on June 12 and 13, while South Interior Karnataka may experience similar conditions between June 11 and 14. Telangana is also likely to experience heavy rainfall from June 9-10.

The Meteorological Department further predicts thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of up to 60 km/h across several states. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are expected to witness such conditions between June 10 and 14, while eastern and central states including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal are also likely to see thunderstorm activity during this week.

A Western Disturbance could affect the weather conditions in northwest India and bring scattered rainfall over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir till June 14. Hail is also forecast over these mountain states on June 11 and 12. Parts of Haryana and Delhi may also witness isolated hailstorm on June 12. A dust storm was forecast over western Rajasthan on 11 and 12 June.

Along with thunderstorm activity, wind speed could reach 50-70 kmph over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh during June 11-12. Similar conditions may also be observed in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal between June 10 and 12.

Despite increasing rainfall in the country, heat waves are expected to persist in isolated pockets of northwest and central India over the next few days. Heat waves are likely over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha till June 10-11. Parts of East and West Madhya Pradesh are said to experience heat waves on June 10 and 11 as well.

Hot and humid weather is expected to prevail over Odisha till June 11, along with Konkan and Goa and also Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till June 9.

Meanwhile, maximum temperatures in northwest India are likely to increase by 2-4°C till June 11 and then decrease by 3-5°C.

Central India may see another rise in temperature of 2-3°C by June 11, followed by a similar drop. Maharashtra is expected to see a nominal drop of around 2°C by 9 June. However, no significant changes in temperatures are expected in the rest of India till June 14.
