Rains lash Mumbai, IMD issues orange alert in parts of Maharashtra; hot and humid conditions likely | Today’s news
Following an unusually delayed onset of the Southwest Monsoon, parts of Mumbai received light to moderate showers on Sunday morning, offering people some relief from the prevailing heat and humidity.
In its latest weather update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated favorable conditions for the further advance of the Southwest Monsoon over parts of Maharashtra.
“Conditions are favorable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon to some other parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar and some parts of Chhattisgarh around June 23, 2026,” the IMD said on Sunday.
Yellow and orange alerts
The IMD has issued an orange alert in Yavatmal, Nagpur, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli.
Yellow alert has been issued in Mumbai, Nanded, Solapur, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri.
Heat wave warning; hot and humid weather likely
The Meteorological Department has also predicted heat wave in isolated pockets over Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra.
A heat wave warning has been issued in Amravati, Akola and Wardha.
“Hot and humid conditions are very likely to prevail over isolated pockets in South Konkan-Goa districts. Heat waves are very likely to prevail over isolated pockets over North Konkan and North Madhya Maharashtra districts,” Mumbai Regional Meteorological Center X posted.
Monsoon reached South Konkan earlier this month, but its further progress has stalled due to adverse weather conditions.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Ramabai Municipal School in Ghatkopar recorded the highest rainfall of 24 mm between 6 am and 7 am, followed by Chembur fire station with 20 mm and Mankhurd fire station with 16 mm.
During the next hour, from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM, Worli Seaface Municipal School and Savitribai Phule Municipal School recorded 25 mm of rainfall, the highest in the city. The G-South divisional office in Lower Parel received 21 mm of rainfall while the Worli fire station recorded 17 mm.
No significant incidents of waterlogging or rain were reported during the said period, officials said.
