No place for Yashasvi Jaiswal in ODI squad, Varun Chakravarthy ruled Ireland in T20Is

Less than 24 hours after celebrating his second ODI century for India, Yashasvi Jaiswal suffered a major setback as the opener was left out of the squad for the upcoming ODI series against England. Meanwhile, India also suffered injuries as star spinner Varun Chakravarthy was ruled out of the T20I series against Ireland due to his failure to recover from a left leg injury.

Jaiswal appeared to have strengthened his bid for a regular seat India’s ODI setup after scoring a brilliant 110 in the third and final ODI against Afghanistan. Drafted into the side as a replacement for Virat Kohli, who missed the series with a hamstring injury, the left-hander featured in two matches and scored 114 runs, with his match-winning century highlighting his growing credit in the format.

However, the return of Kohli again pushed Jaiswal out of India’s ODI plans. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the England series on Sunday 21 June, with Kohli included subject to a fitness test. As India begin to form their core group for the 2027 ODI World Cup, competition for places remains fierce and Jaiswal has found himself on the wrong side of selection despite impressive returns.

The omission continues a frustrating trend for the young opener, who has established himself as a key figure in India’s Test set-up but is yet to cement a place in limited-overs sides. He also missed out on selection for the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup earlier this year.

Despite playing only six ODIs, Jaiswal has already amassed 285 runs at an average of 71.25. His record spans two centuries, underscoring the impact he has made whenever he has the opportunity. Still, with established stars returning and India’s selectors favoring stability over a busy international calendar, he will have to wait for another chance.

While Jaiswal’s dismissal grabbed the headlines, India were also forced to record a major injury update regarding Varun Chakravarthy.

The ICC’s No. 2 T20I bowler has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match T20I series against Ireland after failing to recover from a left leg injury sustained during IPL 2026. The series is scheduled to begin on June 26, but Chakravarthy will remain at the BCCI Center of Excellence while he completes his rehabilitation. Prince Yadav was announced as his successor.

“Varun Chakravarthy is in the final stages of his rehabilitation at the BCCI COE following a left leg injury sustained in the TATA IPL 2026. He is ruled out of the T20I series against Ireland,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said in a statement.

The mystery spinner has not played competitive cricket since Kolkata Knight Riders’ last league game against Delhi Capitals in the IPL. Despite carrying the injury for parts of the tournament, Chakravarthy still managed to take 11 wickets at an economy rate of 8.78.

However, there is some encouragement for India and the players. Chakravarthy remains part of the T20I squad for the upcoming series against England and the BCCI has not ruled him out of the task. A final decision on his availability is expected closer to the England leg of India’s UK tour.

With the squad lined up and injuries starting to test India’s depth, both Jaiswal and Chakravarthy face conflicting challenges – one waiting for another opportunity, the other racing against time to regain fitness.
