The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to ask the Vellore Corporation to construct a wide culvert at the intersection of Chenganatham Hill Road and the service lane of the Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) at Rangapuram near the Collectorate to prevent seepage of sewage on the road.
NHAI officials said the constant movement of trucks and lorries on the stretch to private quarries at the foothills has damaged the storm water drain that collects sewage from households at the junction of the stretch.
As a result, the roadway at the intersection and the service lane become waterlogged. “We will request the Vellore Corporation to construct a wide culvert to prevent waterlogging at the junction and damage to the road. During monsoon, motor pump sets are used to pump out stagnant water at the junction,” said an NHAI official.
Currently Vellore Corporation maintains Chenganatham Hill Road. Areas like Rangapuram and Mullakollai, which come under ward 24 of Zone-II of the Vellore Corporation, are located along the stretch. “The idea of building a culvert at the junction will be discussed with the NHAI. The allocation of funds for the work also includes the approval of the General Council,” R. Lakshman, Commissioner, Vellore Corporation, told The Hindu.
Several stone quarries also operate near the hill in the section. Government buses also ply between hilltop villages and urban areas. “School students and senior citizens have to use muddy and waterlogged junctions during rains. They slip and fall on stagnant sewage. A permanent solution should be put in place,” said B. Satish, a motorist.
