Mass shooting in Minneapolis leaves multiple dead, police officers among six injured News Today

At least three people, including the suspected gunman, were killed Wednesday afternoon (local time) in a mass shooting at an apartment building in downtown Minneapolis. The Associated Press, citing Minneapolis police, said one of the victims was fatally shot at the scene and one died after arriving at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Sgt. Garrett Parten, public information officer for the Minneapolis Police Department, said three officers were also injured in the incident.

One of the officers was shot in the leg and another was hit in the stomach, according to the local WCCO CBS affiliate. Both are said to be out of danger, while the nature of the third officer’s injuries was not immediately clear.

“The Minneapolis Police Department is on the scene of a shooting … involving multiple victims, including two officers,” the city said in a statement.

Hennepin Healthcare, which runs the local hospital, said it received seven patients from the shooting and one died.

Tim Walz, Kash Patel respond

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he was aware of the incident and thanked the police who responded to the situation. He said his public safety team is also heading to the area.

“We are grateful that law enforcement agencies are actively working this afternoon to keep our neighbors safe in downtown Minneapolis,” Walz said on X. “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”

FBI Director Kash Patel also said his agency was aware of it and that its staff was responding. “We will offer whatever resources are necessary to assist local authorities,” Patel said on X.

A video posted on social media shows police aiming rifles up at a residential tower near the Minneapolis Convention Center.

What the eyewitnesses said

Eyewitnesses told The Associated Press that the suspected shooter was a resident of the apartment building.

Julius Bailey said he was sitting outside his apartment building when he heard gunshots and saw a man he recognized as a resident of the building holding a gun. Bailey said he heard the woman scream and immediately started running. He said he counted eight shots.

Bailey said he recognized the man holding the gun because he was someone who was known to show off his gun. Bailey said he had tried to avoid the man since he moved into the building in June.

“I could tell he was in trouble,” he told the AP.

Chris Miller, who also lives in the apartment building, said he heard a rapid succession of gunshots and quickly ran outside to get to safety. He said he believed he knew who did the shooting and that he encountered someone in the hallway with a gun earlier this week and reported that person to management.
