Gunfire erupted in New York City’s Times Square on Thursday afternoon, sparking alarm among visitors and locals alike, although authorities reported no injuries and no immediate arrests.

The incident took place just a short distance from a parked police vehicle. The shooting occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m., shortly after a parade celebrating the NBA champion New York Knicks drew large crowds to the streets of Lower Manhattan, according to PTI.

Authorities said around 10,000 police officers were deployed to provide security at the event honoring the Knicks’ first championship win in 53 years.

New York police confirmed the incident to AFP, saying it happened in a busy entertainment district that has welcomed an influx of World Cup fans since the tournament began last week.

Times Square shooting: Videos show panic among people

Videos shared online showed scenes of chaos as people rushed to leave the area after several gunshots rang out across the square.

Webcam footage appears to show at least two individuals dressed in black entering a busy intersection Thursday and firing what appeared to be handguns into the area.

The sound of gunfire caused panic among onlookers, people were seen running to safety or taking cover. The suspects then fled down the street while being chased by several police officers patrolling the popular tourist destination.

Police said officers quickly pursued the suspect after the shooting. Firefighters confirmed that one person was taken to hospital, but further information about his condition was not immediately available.

The incident comes less than a week after a 17-year-old was shot and killed in Times Square while fans were celebrating the Knicks’ championship victory over San Antonio, according to police. In such a case, the police officers took the victim to the hospital themselves as heavy crowds prevented the ambulance from reaching the spot.
