Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek beaten up during visit to Sonarpur, locals tear TMC MP’s T-shirt: ‘BJP-sponsored’ — Video | Today’s news

Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee was manhandled by locals during his visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal on Saturday, May 30. Videos shared on social media showed unidentified persons gheraoing and beating Abhishek Banerjee, who is also the nephew of TMC supremo and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

After the attack, a visibly shaken Abhishek Banerjee blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the incident. “All this is sponsored by BJP. Look what they have done. This is their example of democracy. Not even a month has passed and the police is nowhere to be seen,” ANI quoted him as saying.

“They hit me in the eye with a brick, threw an egg”

TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee said he was attacked by a mob when he met the family of a TMC worker killed in the post-poll violence.

He said: “They threw bricks, threw eggs and threw stones. Please tell me what it is.”

“And all the people standing nearby, the people of the area… they still meet us and still greet us with love and respect… go and ask those who are doing hooliganism here. We have all the evidence on video,” Banerjee said.

He further claimed, “There is a community hall nearby. From 11:00 goons were kept in that community hall to throw stones. Look what happened to my glasses…”

“They hit me in the eye with a brick and I can’t open my eye. He punched me in the back, chest, arm and leg… I was wearing a helmet otherwise my head would have split in half…,” Banerjee said.

Showing resilience, Banerjee added, “You can make my body fall, but my determination is strong and strong, the passion and enthusiasm is still there and this head will not bow.”

‘They wanted to kill me’

Furious over the incident, Abhishek Banerjee also claimed, “…They wanted to kill me… The entire incident was caught on camera. We will definitely let the high court know about it. We will also let the governor know about it… I will definitely approach the court…”

He said, “..If the two security officials sent with me report the incident to their superiors but no force arrives, then it is clear that the higher authorities want this whole incident to continue and the state government has no effort to stop it.”

“This clearly shows that as one death happened here, similarly there should be another 2-4 deaths; only then they will be given peace. Let them do what they want. We have everything on record,” Banerjee told reporters.

‘Move SC’

Banerjee added that he would approach the Supreme Court over the incident.

He said: “I will move the Supreme Court and table a notice of privilege motion in Parliament. I will not leave my parents until the police come, otherwise people may kill them.”

Mamata Banerjee says “RULERS HAVE BECOME…”

Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP after her nephew and close aide Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by a mob on Saturday.

Reposting tMC’s post on X, Mamata Banerjee said: “RULERS HAVE BECOME KILLERS – shame on you BJP.”

Meanwhile, TMC posted on X: “Shri @abhishekaitc stayed true to his word and REFUSED to Abandon the grieving family of Sanju Karmakar.”

“Even after a brutal attack by @BJP4Bengal backed miscreants, our National General Secretary chose not to return. Instead, he stood by a family devastated by an unimaginable loss allegedly caused by BJP backed hoodlums,” the party wrote on social media.

He added: “That’s the difference between compassion-driven politics and hate-driven politics. @SuvenduWB, today’s events have once again exposed the kind of politics you preside over – a politics rooted in intimidation, violence and revenge.”

BJP leaders condemn the incident

On the attack on TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, who is also a BJP leader, said, “I condemn this incident. I appeal to the public not to take law and order into their own hands… Bengali public is furious against TMC and Abhishek Banerjee… We need to improve Bengali violence and trust public politics to maintain free law and order.”
