The Center has decided to convert the historic Madikeri Palace in Karnataka’s Kodagu district into a heritage tourist destination, taking up the conservation and development of the site, which includes a proposed museum and upgraded visitor facilities. The development follows the efforts of Mysuru-Kodag MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, who sought protected monument status for the palace.

Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat informed MPs that the palace has been declared a protected monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. Also, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is examining various proposals for comprehensive development of the monument.

Among the proposals under consideration is a local museum with digital exhibits aimed at showcasing Kodagu’s rich history and cultural heritage, besides enhancing the visitor experience and encouraging greater public engagement.

On 18 March 2025, Mr. Wadiyar submitted a statement to the Union government demanding protected monument status for the palace and establishment of a museum at the site. Since then, he has been taking up the matter with the Ministry of Culture and senior ASI officials.

Welcoming the Centre’s response, Mr. Wadiyar expressed confidence that the project would help transform Madikeri Palace into a key cultural and tourist destination.

The initiative is expected to promote the preservation of Kodagu’s cultural heritage and attract greater national attention and investment to the region’s historic sites.
