Actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha on Thursday said that he will not abandon Mamata Banerjee even in tough times, stressing that she supported him during his own trying time.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP from Asansol said while some people may have distanced themselves from Banerjee due to pressure, fear or temptation, he remains committed to principles and will not leave the party or its leadership, according to PTI.

He said that he has always been outspoken by nature and that he often believes that if telling the truth is considered “rebellion”, then he too can be called a “rebel”. He further stated that he always spoke openly and directly, never hesitating to call a spade a spade.

“For the past few days, there has been a lot of speculation about me. Some people are telling the truth, others are spreading rumours. Some have said that I have joined a so-called rebel group. Yes, I have always been outspoken by nature. I often say that if speaking the truth is considered rebellion, then I am also a rebel. I have always been outspoken for the spa that I wanted my mother to call me state. tough times and today, in her tough phase, I cannot leave her,” Sinha told PTI.

He added, “I have been elected as the symbol of Trinamool Congress – ‘Jora Phool’ – not once, but twice, with God’s blessings. Therefore, it is my duty and responsibility to stand with Mamata ji and the Trinamool Congress…my principle is very clear: when Mamata ji stood by me in my difficult times, it is now my duty to stand by her in this moment as well.”

He pointed out that Banerjee is a resilient leader who continues to enjoy a 41% vote share in West Bengal despite the TMC’s defeat in the recent assembly elections. He also clarified that he has always worked for all the people of Bengal, regardless of their political affiliation or whether they voted for him, and stated that he understood his duties and would continue to fulfill them conscientiously.

Meanwhile, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee held a nearly 90-minute meeting with Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss opposition unity and the future direction of the INDIA bloc, at a time when the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faces growing internal turmoil, including fresh resignations and growing dissent within the party.

The meeting came a day after Mamata Banerjee met Sonia Gandhi. TMC leaders said the discussions were part of ongoing consultations between allies of the Indian bloc following an opposition meeting held in the national capital on Monday.
