IMD predicts heavy rains over East, Central and South India | Today’s news
Monsoon activity is likely to remain active in several parts of India this week, with widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning forecast in eastern, central, southern and northwestern regions, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD, in its forecast on Tuesday, said isolated heavy rainfall is expected over eastern India during the next three to four days. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is expected over Andaman and Nicobar Islands and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during September 9-14.
Jharkhand is likely to experience widespread rains during September 9-11, while Odisha is expected to witness similar conditions during September 10-12. Isolated heavy rainfall is forecast over Bihar during 9-10. September and Jharkhand during 9-11 September. Odisha could receive very heavy rainfall on September 10.
Central India is also likely to see increased rainfall activity. Chhattisgarh and East Madhya Pradesh are expected to experience moderate to widespread rains during September 10-14, while West Madhya Pradesh may experience similar conditions during September 12-14. Heavy rain is likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh during September 12-13, while Chhattisgarh may experience heavy rain during September 10-14.
Southern states are expected to receive scattered rainfall during the week, with coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep seeing widespread rain during September 10-12. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely to occur over Telangana during September 12-14.
The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds that may reach up to 60 kilometers per hour over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Rainy weekend
Rainfall activity is expected to intensify over the weekend in northwest India. Uttarakhand is likely to experience moderate to widespread rain accompanied by thundershowers during September 10-14. Himachal Pradesh could experience similar conditions during September 13-14. Isolated heavy rainfall is forecast over Uttarakhand during September 10 to 14.
The widespread rain forecast comes as the southwest monsoon remains active in several regions, with heavy rainfall likely to affect agriculture, transport and local infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
As of 7 September, cumulative rainfall (1 June to 7 September) was 642.9 mm, 14% below normal of 748.3 mm.
Meanwhile, several parts of east and central India received heavy to very heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours that ended at 8:30 am on Tuesday, according to the IMD. Very heavy rainfall of 12-20 cm was recorded over Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Assam, while heavy rainfall of 7-11 cm was reported from East Uttar Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha and Mizoram.
