Monsoon Update: Delhi braces for more showers today, Mumbai on yellow alert — see full weather forecast here | Today’s news

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today forecast the advance of Southwest Monsoon to some other parts of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh. It also warned of the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall over northeast India and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the week.

“Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Bihar during June 17-20 with isolated very heavy rainfall also likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during June 17-22,” the IMD said.

The IMD predicts heavy showers in Assam and Meghalaya till June 22: “Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh during June 18-22.” The Meteorological Department has also predicted wet spells for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura between June 18 and 20.

Prevailing atmospheric conditions suggest that a fresh western disturbance will bring light to moderate “rainfall over western Himalayan region and isolated rain with thunderstorm activity over the plains of northwest India” from 18 to 22 June 2026.

Besides, heat waves are likely to persist in isolated pockets over Vidarbha in Maharashtra till June 19, Telangana till June 18 and Chhattisgarh till June 17.

Rajasthan is under orange alert by IMD amid chances of rain and dust storms today. The Met department has also issued an orange alert for parts of West Bengal and Sikkim as these areas are expected to witness heavy downpour on June 17.

Moving on to the rainfall forecast for south peninsular India, the IMD has predicted a chance of isolated heavy rains over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from June 17-18 and Kerala and Mahe today. Additionally, isolated thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 40-50 kmph with gusts up to 60 kmph are likely over Telangana today; Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal by June 18; North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka from June 19 to 20; and coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam till June 20.

Heat wave warning

“Heat wave is very likely in isolated pockets over Chhattisgarh on June 17; Madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada during June 18-19; Telangana during June 17-18; Vidarbha during June 17-19; West Uttar Pradesh during June 19-22,” the IMD said in its latest bulletin.

Gangetic West Bengal may witness hot and humid weather till June 18, Odisha till June 20, Konkan and Goa till June 19 and coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam till June 17, the IMD bulletin said.

The Meteorological Department has also predicted a gradual rise in the maximum temperature in Maharashtra by about 2°C till June 19.

Today’s weather in Delhi

Forecasting partly clear skies in the capital on Wednesday, the Met department said: “Chance of very light to light rain with thundershower/lightning by morning/afternoon.”

The maximum temperature over Delhi is likely to be 1.6°C to 3.0°C below normal in the range of 33°C to 35°C, while the minimum temperature will be close to normal (-1.5°C to 1.5°C) around 26°C to 28°C.

The IMD has lifted its yellow warning of heavy rains, but the city may witness more showers in the next four days. The maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi are likely to increase by 3-4 degrees Celsius during the next four to five days.

Meanwhile, Mumbai, the financial capital, is on yellow alert due to hot and humid weather. The yellow alert will continue till June 19, while the city may experience rainfall tomorrow, the IMD said.
