Sonam Wangchuk is on hunger strike to protest the NEET-UG paper leak scandal and demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Wangchuk has lost 8.5kg, has low blood pressure, muscle loss and is said to be in excruciating pain as his health continues to deteriorate.
A video by food vlogger Aayush Sapra reviewing food at a protest site while Wangchuk was on hunger strike drew criticism for its insensitivity and tone.
Public reaction was mixed, with many criticizing the timing and insensitivity of the video, while others discussed broader themes surrounding influencer culture.
A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking urgent medical intervention for Wangchuk, highlighting the need for hospital treatment and proper care.
He holds a bowl of chole and says, “Here we have chole ki sabji. Roti is being eaten. The demand is very high. Sirf Sonam ji is hungry, rest of the food is being eaten. (Here we have chole. Rotis are ready because the demand is so high. Only Sonam ji is hungry while everyone else is eating.)”
Later in the video, the vlogger continues talking to the participants and says that he feels like teasing Sonam Wangchuk with the samosas and chutneys she eats.
While food for volunteers and supporters is routinely prepared at protest sites, the video drew attention because it focused on evaluating the food at the site where Wangchuk is on an indefinite hunger strike.
