As Delhi prepares to host the 18th BRICS summit this weekend, several heads of multilateral organizations are due to arrive today. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in the capital early on Friday, September 11, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres due to arrive later in the day.

Ahead of the 11-member BRICS summit scheduled for September 12 and 13, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) shared a service update and informed passengers that train services remain intact despite complicated traffic restrictions on several key routes.

Amid growing concerns about the operation of metro services on Friday, September 11, Delhi Metro said in a post on X: “Commuters are hereby informed that all metro stations will remain open till further notice. Operations continue as usual unless specifically notified otherwise. Commuters are advised to check the DMRC website, social media platforms or the Delhi Metro Sarthi app for further updates.”

Delhi Transport Police urges commuters to prefer Metro

As the metro service has not been suspended, the Delhi Traffic Police has urged airport commuters to take the metro instead of private cars or taxis. In its latest travel advisory, the Delhi Transport Police said, “Commuters are advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra time, use public transport, especially the metro, and follow designated diversion routes and instructions from traffic personnel.

According to authorities, traffic diversions and regulated movement will be in place on key routes in Delhi from 2:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

The Delhi Traffic Police has issued a detailed travel advisory as the national capital prepares to host a major event at the Bharat Mandapam. Authorities set out a plan detailing traffic diversions, restrictions and alternative routes, while urging commuters to prioritize the metro and allow extra time. More than 35 roads have been identified for regulated movement and 22 diversion points have been designated across Delhi in view of the movement of foreign delegations and VVIP convoys.

For those heading to New Delhi, Old Delhi and Hazarat Nizamuddin railway stations, check the selected routes listed in the Delhi Traffic Alert to avoid delays or disruptions. The recommendation mentions 3 alternative routes for New Delhi Railway Station – one from ISBT Kashmir Gate to Connaught Place, another from Ashram to JLN Marg and third from Vande Mataram Marg to Connaught Place.

The bulletin also details 3 alternative routes for those heading to Old Delhi Railway Station – one from ISBT Kashmir Gate to SP Mukherjee Marg, another from Ashram Chowk to SP Mukherjee Marg and the third from Rani Jhansi Marg to Lothiyan Marg.

Commuters to Hazarat Nizamuddin Railway Station can use two of these alternative routes — AIIMS on Mathura Road or ISBT Kashmiri Gate on Mathura Road. The Delhi Traffic Police has also laid down a schedule for traveling to the airport from various locations across the city.

Amid heightened security, the Delhi Police deployed nearly 4,800 traffic personnel to accommodate the summit. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that several other top officials will attend the summit, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. At the two-day summit under the theme: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, leaders will exchange views on strengthening BRICS cooperation on common priorities and share perspectives on global and regional issues of common concern.
