The Delhi Traffic Police has issued a detailed travel advisory ahead of the BRICS Leaders’ Summit scheduled to be held at the Bharat Mandapam from September 11 to 13. As the nation’s capital prepares to host the spectacular event, authorities have laid out a plan detailing traffic diversions, restrictions and alternative routes, while urging commuters to prefer the metro and allow extra time.
With VIP convoys and international delegations expected to move through the city on the specified days, the Delhi Traffic Police said in a post on X, “Traffic arrangements may change depending on traffic and security requirements,” as it revealed that traffic on more than 35 roads will be affected.
Roads to avoid
The notice lists 32 controlled roads that commuters must avoid, which are listed below:
For those heading to New Delhi, Old Delhi and Hazarat Nizamuddin railway stations, please check the selected routes listed in the Delhi Traffic Advisory to avoid delays or disruptions. The recommendation mentions 3 alternative routes for New Delhi Railway Station – one from ISBT Kashmir Gate to Connaught Place, another from Ashram to JLN Marg and third from Vande Mataram Marg to Connaught Place.
The briefing paper also details 3 alternative routes for Old Delhi Railway Station – one from ISBT Kashmir Gate to SP Mukherjee Marg, another from Ashram Chowk to SP Mukherjee Marg and third from Rani Jhansi Marg to Lothiyan Marg.
Commuters to Hazarat Nizamuddin Railway Station can use two of these alternative routes — AIIMS on Mathura Road or ISBT Kashmiri Gate on Mathura Road.

Apart from the 22 diversion points and 35 controlled roads, there are other restrictions as street vendors in several parts of Delhi have been asked to stop selling. The National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) protested the restrictions and urged the authorities to ensure that security measures do not come at the expense of their livelihoods.
According to NASVI, vendors in several key areas including Indie Gate, Madangir, Bhikaji Cama Place, Vasant Vihar, Saket and RK Puram have reportedly been asked by the Delhi Police not to set up their stalls and continue with vending activities. “While security and traffic arrangements are a necessary part of hosting an international summit, the burden of these preparations cannot be placed disproportionately on street vendors whose daily income is their sole source of livelihood,” PTI quoted NASVI as saying.
Nearly 25,000 security personnel, over 100 National Security Guard (NSG) commandos and anti-drone systems have been deployed as tight security measures are in place for the 18th BRICS summit starting on September 11. Guests and heads of state from 11 member countries and 10 partner countries are expected to participate in the two-day summit.
