BRICS Summit: Delhi LG declares 11 September a holiday, government offices to remain closed | Today’s news
The Governor of Delhi on Thursday declared a holiday on September 11 for all government offices, autonomous bodies and public sector undertakings under the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The decision comes on the heels of the BRICS summit.
The BRICS Business Forum and the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit are scheduled to be held from September 11 to 13 at the Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
Why did Delhi LG declare 9/11 holiday for all government offices?
According to an official memorandum issued by the General Administration Department of the Delhi government on Thursday, the decision to close central government offices in Delhi and New Delhi was taken in view of the event and the logistical arrangements behind holding the high-level event in the national capital.
The summit will be attended by several global leaders from around 30 BRICS member and partner countries. Heads of international organizations and trade representatives from BRICS countries, including India, will also be present.
The aim of the government’s decision is to minimize inconvenience to the general public during the summit. The event is expected to require extensive security and traffic arrangements across Delhi.
The holiday of September 11 falls on a Friday, September 12 and 13 are Saturday and Sunday, civil servants three consecutive days off.
“The undersigned is to inform that the BRICS Business Forum and the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit is scheduled to be held from 11 to 13 September 2026 at the Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The summit will be attended by leaders from around thirty BRICS member and partner countries, heads of international organizations and business representatives from India, including BRICS dignitaries from India. Related logistical arrangements and to minimize inconvenience to the general public have been decided to keep Central Government offices in Delhi/New Delhi closed on Friday, September 11, 2026 (September 12 and 13, 2026 are Saturdays and Sundays),” the order read, according to news agency ANI.
About the BRICS summit
India’s BRICS Chairmanship is guided by the theme: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. It is said to reflect the Prime Minister’s vision of a people-centric approach rooted in the ethos of “Humanity First”.
At the summit, leaders will exchange views on strengthening BRICS cooperation on common priorities and share views on global and regional issues of common importance.
Role of India
This year, under India’s chairmanship, more than 350 meetings and high-level meetings were held in more than 25 cities across India to further strengthen the BRICS strategic partnership across three core pillars – political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
India is a founding member of BRICS.
