BCCI not planning director of cricket role: Devajit Saikia ends VVS Laxman speculation

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has ended speculation that VVS Laxman will be appointed as the Director of Cricket as part of the reshuffle of Indian cricket. After the BCCI meeting on Thursday, September 3, Saikia said the board had no plans to hold a meeting with a view to the role going forward.

India Today reported in August that Laxman could be in line for an expanded role at the BCCI as the board considers changes to its cricket structure in September. Laxman, who currently heads the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru, has emerged as a potential candidate for the proposed role of director of cricket, according to sources who spoke to India Today.

The option comes at a time when the BCCI is gearing up for changes across key areas of Indian cricket.

If Laxman is given the role of director of cricket, it would mean a substantial increase in his responsibilities. At the Center of Excellence, he was involved in overseeing player development and India’s high performance programs.

The role, if created, could have put Laxman at the heart of India’s cricket operations, likely bridging the senior team, selectors, coaches and center of excellence, while overseeing talent identification, player development and high performance planning.
