The Missouri State Highway Patrol said in a statement that its troopers were dispatched to the scene of the crash and were assisting the Butler Police Department and Bates County Sheriff’s Office with the response operation.
The plane crashed near Butler Memorial Airport in Butler, a city located approximately 65 miles south of Kansas City.
“Officers are on scene assisting the Butler Police Department and Bates County Sheriff’s Office with a fatal plane crash near Butler Memorial Airport. At this time, reports indicate that all passengers (12 total) have died,” the Missouri State Highway Patrol said on X.
According to Ewing, emergency responders received a report around 11:30 a.m. Sunday that the plane had crashed and was engulfed in flames, the release said.
Ewing said firefighters were able to get the fire under control shortly after the crash and described the scene as “brutal.” Giving details of the location, he said: “It landed in a field adjacent to the airport, but I think they’re just closing the road as a precaution.”
