Who is Livano Comencia? Curacao hero stunned Germany with historic World Cup goal
Livano Comenencia made Curacao football history on Sunday after scoring the first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against four-time champions Germany. The 22-year-old defender became an unlikely hero in Houston, creating a moment that briefly left the smallest nation in World Cup history upset for the ages.
However, the dream did not last long. Germany responded with the ruthlessness expected of a footballing powerhouse, stretching their lead to 3-1 before Jamal Musiala made it 4-1. For Curacao, what started as a historic debut at the faith-filled World Cup slowly turned into a harsh lesson against one of the sport’s biggest giants.
GERMANY VS CURAAO, FIFA WORLD CUP 2026: UPDATES
WATCH CURAAO’S FIRST GOAL AT THE WORLD CUP:
Curacao arrived at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the smallest nation to ever qualify for the tournament, with a population of around 158,000. Facing a Germany team full of elite talent and led by veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, few expected them to make headlines in their opening match.
Yet for one memorable moment, they did just that.
After Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha put Germany ahead inside six minutes, the match seemed to be going according to the expected scenario. Germany dominated possession, dominated territory and looked comfortable.
Then came the moment that changed the mood at NRG Stadium in Houston.
A strike from Curacao found its way into the German box before Leandro Bacuna’s effort was blocked. The loose ball broke kindly for Comenencia, who arrived from deep and struck a ferocious effort that took a slight deflection before curling past Neuer.
The celebrations were immediate and emotional. Curacao’s players sprinted towards the corner flag as fans celebrated a goal that will forever hold a special place in the country’s sporting history.
As commentator Ian Darke summed it up perfectly: “History in Houston. A nation of barely more than 100,000 souls just silenced millions.”
WHO IS LIVANO COMEENCIA?
Comenencia, born February 3, 2004, is a footballer of Dutch origin who currently plays for Swiss Super League club FC Zurich and represents Curacao at international level.
The right-back developed through PSV Eindhoven’s highly regarded academy before earning a move to Juventus in 2023. In Italy, he was with Juventus Next Gen, an under-23 club, where he gained valuable experience in senior football.
In August 2025, he completed his transfer to FC Zurich and continued his steady rise through European football.
Prior to his stint in Curacao, Comenencia represented the Netherlands at youth level and played for the U18 and U19 national teams. He later chose to represent his Caribbean roots and became part of the generation that led Curacao to its first ever FIFA World Cup appearance.
He now owns perhaps the most important goal in national football history.
HOW CURACAO MADE WORLD CUP HISTORY
Curacao’s qualification itself was one of the stories of the tournament.
Led by 78-year-old Dick Advocaat, the oldest coach in World Cup history, the Caribbean nation arrived in North America with the hope of a small soccer community. Their opening game against Germany was seen by many as a free hit.
With Nmecha striking early, a tough evening seemed inevitable.
Instead, Curacao has shown remarkable composure. They gradually settled into the game, pushed higher and found moments of possession against one of the favorites of the competition. Their reward came in the 21st minute with a historic strike by Comenencia.
The goal also brought one of the lighter moments of the tournament. After finding the net, Comenencia celebrated with John Cena’s famous “You Can’t See Me” gesture, echoing a German fan who performed the same celebration after Nmecha’s layup.
Germany finally restored order and reminded everyone why they remain among the tournament favorites. Still, even as the score drifted away from Curacao, the significance of Comenencio’s goal never diminished.
For a nation of just 158,000 people, just taking part in the World Cup was a remarkable achievement.
Scoring his first ever World Cup goal against Germany ensured that regardless of the final result, Curacao’s debut on football’s biggest stage will never be forgotten.
