Rahul clarified that the gesture was not meant to be disrespectful. Instead, it was something deeply personal that happened to him during his four to five months of injury rehabilitation. “I told him, ‘No, sir, I didn’t mean it as disrespect.’ During those months I was wounded, I had a dream about this celebration – like a statue. It wasn’t just mine; he felt he belonged to everyone. That’s why this celebration is so special to me,” he said. Asia Cup 2023 turned into an unforgettable comeback story for Rahul. He wasn’t even supposed to play that match against Pakistan but was drafted in at the last minute after Shreyas Iyer suffered a back spasm. This was followed by a remarkable century alongside Virat Kohli in one of India’s most dominant performances. Rahul admitted that 2023 was one of the toughest years of his career, marked by a serious thigh injury during an IPL game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru that required surgery. “Oh yes, it was 2023… a bad, bad year,” he recalled. During his rehabilitation, Rahul said he battled physical pain and heavy criticism. “Every morning I woke up and told myself the same thing – that I will be the best player in the world. So I kept motivating myself to keep going,” he said.
