A San Francisco train driver who allegedly “fell asleep at the wheel” caused panic on board after a packed light rail bus lurched violently as it exited a tunnel, according to newly released CCTV footage.
The incident occurred at around 8:37 a.m. on September 24, when a San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) operator, later fatigued, appeared to doze off the controls for a moment. The train, traveling at nearly 80 km/h (50 mph), jerked violently as it rounded a curve, sending several commuters tripping into walls and onto the floor, The Independent reported.
The train passed the planned stop before it suddenly stopped short of it. No derailments or injuries were reported.
In the video, the footage shows the driver’s eyes closed and her head tilting to the side while the passengers are shaken. The terrified driver can be heard telling worried passengers: “Relax… we didn’t crash,” while repeatedly apologizing.
Rescuers rushed to the scene and the SFMTA began an investigation. In a statement issued on November 10, the agency confirmed that the error was caused by “operator fatigue” and said the driver had been placed on off-duty duty until further notice. A full inspection found no problems with the brakes, belts or other systems.
The transport authority said it has stepped up fatigue management training and is working with a manufacturer on software to automatically limit speed in certain sections.
“We know this was a scary experience for our riders… Safety is always our top priority,” SFMTA Transportation Director Julie Kirschbaum said in a statement.
The agency said the operator has been placed on “non-driving status” and that the matter is being handled according to internal protocols. ABC News reported.
“Safety is always our top priority,” said SFMTA Director Julie Kirschbaum, adding that the agency remains committed to full responsibility and is taking all necessary steps to keep Muni service safe and reliable.
