AT&T is scheduled to pay its consumers in 2026 as part of a class-action lawsuit following last year’s data breach. Details of the lawsuit were revealed in August, with the telecom giant agreeing to pay a total of $177 million to affected users. According to reports, some people could get up to $7,500.
Here’s everything you need to know about the lawsuit, how much you’ll receive, when to expect it, and whether you’re eligible for settlement funds.
What was the AT&T data breach?
AT&T was accused of two separate data breach incidents last year that led to the lawsuit. First, on March 30, 2024, some customers’ data — including addresses, social security numbers, dates of birth, access codes, billing numbers and phone numbers — was published on the dark web, the Kroll Settlement Administration said.
Limited data was then illegally downloaded on July 12, 2024, which included customers and other users associated with the accounts and numbers they interacted with.
Are you eligible for an AT&T settlement?
Customers affected by both data breaches are entitled to file a settlement complaint:
- AT&T’s Class 1 settlement had data from a breach announced in March 2024. According to the settlement’s website, their data could include a combination of “names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, account access codes, billing account numbers, and Social Security numbers.”
- The second group of data related to a breach announced in July 2024. AT&T’s Class 2 settlement could include phone numbers and call data of current and former customers or account users, such as the numbers they communicated with, the number of interactions and the number of calls they made per day or month. The settlement noted that “for a small subset of individuals, there may have been one or more cell ID numbers associated with interactions in the data incident.”
Someone may have had data in both incidents.
