Western Ganga theme chosen for Lalbagh’s Independence Day flower show

For the upcoming flower show on the occasion of 79th Independence Day on August 15, the Department of Horticulture has chosen the rule of the Western Ganga Dynasty as the theme for the exhibition at Lalbagh.

Speaking to The Hindu, M. Jagadeesh, Joint Director of Horticulture (Parks and Gardens) Department said, “We sent about 20 options to the officials concerned and the Chief Minister’s Office. Among them, we were directed to showcase the history of the Western Ganga Dynasty. They ruled the region from 350 AD to 350 AD till 1000 they acquired the powerful kingdom of Kartaka, without recognition. especially in southern Karnataka.”

Mr. Jagadeesh further added, “To gather information about the Western Ganga, our team has contacted various historians, academicians and the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi. Based on their inputs, we are preparing flower exhibits to be displayed at the flower show.” He also pointed out that a special model representing the architecture of the Ganga period is being created in the Glass House. During the exhibition, models depicting prominent rulers of the Ganga period, capitals of the Ganges, their intricacies, remarkable Talakadu temples, paintings and other features will be unveiled.

“The world-famous statue of Bahubali and other monuments at Shravanabelagola were carved during the Ganges era. These are examples of remarkable architecture sponsored by the Ganges. According to our research, they also gave special priority to irrigation. They built various barrages on the Cauvery river and arranged for water to be channeled to the agricultural fields,” he said.

Mr. Jagadeesh also said that the department plans to showcase other ancient dynasties, including Kadambas, Cholas, Chalukyas, Hoysalas and Rashtrakutas, as themes for future editions of the flower show.

The flower exhibition will be held from August 6 to 17. Like every year, it will last 12 days.
