Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman invited to the BRICS summit in Delhi

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been invited to attend the BRICS summit to be held here on September 12 and 13, Shama Obaid, Bangladesh’s foreign minister, said.

Mr Rahman has received an invitation from the Indian government to be a guest at the BRICS summit, Ms Obaid told reporters in Dhaka on Thursday (July 23, 2026).

This is the first BRICS summit to be held since Mr Rahman came to power in February following his Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s landslide victory in general elections held after nearly 15 months of caretaker government in Dhaka. Mr Rahman’s first two foreign trips after taking over were to Malaysia and China last month, when he met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Several important negotiations are pending between India and Bangladesh due to the lack of high-level contacts between the two countries since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government in August 2024. One of these pending issues is the 1996 Ganges Water Treaty, which needs to be renewed as it expires on December 31, 2026, to meet the deadline for renewal and both sides must agree on the deadline.
