Revelations of troubling incidents from FBI Director Kash Patel’s past have resurfaced. During his twenties, Kash Patel admitted to being arrested twice for public intoxication and urinating related to alcohol-related incidents during his youth. In a 2005 letter, Kash Patel admitted to these civil torts, The Intercept reported.
He provided that information in his Florida bar application, according to the publication, citing Patel’s personnel file at the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office. After being admitted to the Florida Bar, Patel secured employment in the public defender’s office at a salary of $40,000.
The document describes cases of alcohol-related indiscretion and states “as directed by my employer”. This shows that Patel’s alcohol abuse had come under scrutiny earlier in his professional life. The revelation comes as the FBI chief pushes back against allegations that drinking is damaging his leadership of the nation’s top law enforcement agency.
Two decades ago, Kash Patel was arrested in 2005, about four months before he wrote the letter. Describing the incident when he was a law student at Pace University in New York at a party with friends, Patel wrote: “We went to a couple of local bars and had some alcoholic drinks.” A “gross departure from appropriate behavior” ensued as a group of friends “attempted to relieve our bladders on the way home”.
He went on to recount what happened next, writing, “Before we could even do that, a police cruiser stopped the group. Then we were arrested for public urination.” Patel also revealed that he was forced to pay a fine after the incident.
Another incident dates back to 2001, when Kash Patel was an undergraduate student at the University of Richmond in Virginia. While in college, he was arrested for public drunkenness due to underage drinking. Patel, who supported the Richmond Rowdies student fan group, was once escorted from the home basketball arena by a school officer. Too much fanfare was the reason for his removal. Elaborating on the incident, he wrote: “The officer arrested me for being drunk in public because I was under 21 years old.
According to the letter in the discussion, Kash Patel admitted to having two drinks. After his arrest, he was forced to pay a fine. Pramod Rameshchandra Patel’s son, Kash Patel, was found guilty of misdemeanor charges days after the incident, NBC News reported.
Concluding the letter, Patel wrote, “Both of these incidents are not consistent with my usual behavior,” he added, “and I hope the board sees them as an anomaly. I doubly apologize for my inappropriate behavior to both the board and the entire community.”
“Kash’s entire background was thoroughly investigated,” confirms a spokesperson for the FBI director
A spokesperson for FBI Director Kash Patel provided clarification on Kash Patel’s background, saying, “Kash’s entire background was thoroughly investigated and vetted before he took on this role,” adding, “These attacks are nothing more than an attempt to undermine the process he was already fit to serve and distract from the FBI’s record-breaking success under Director Patel.”
Notably, Patel’s drinking became the subject of controversy after a video went viral in February showing the FBI director drinking beer with the US Olympic hockey team in Italy.
