US proposes new trilateral peace talks with Russia and Ukraine in UAE: Zelenskyj | Today’s news
The United States has proposed a new trilateral meeting with Ukraine and Russia aimed at advancing efforts to end the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday (September 25th), with the UAE suggested as a possible venue.
Zelenskyy said Kyiv is waiting for the US to provide a date.
The Kremlin signals a possible tripartite negotiation
The Kremlin also said that a trilateral meeting involving Russia, Ukraine and the US could be held in the near future, although it said no concrete details were yet known.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump discussed the possibility of such a meeting during their phone call earlier this month. Moscow has previously indicated that it expects talks to resume in a trilateral format.
The latest proposal follows renewed US diplomatic efforts, including meetings between US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner with Russian and Ukrainian officials earlier this month. Ukrainian officials described the effort as a restart of the diplomatic process.
The United Arab Emirates has once again emerged as a place for peace talks
The UAE has previously hosted talks between the US, Russia and Ukraine. Earlier trilateral negotiations were held in Abu Dhabi, while the next round was held in Geneva. These talks did not produce a major breakthrough, with territorial and other key issues remaining unresolved.
The UAE’s possible role comes as Washington seeks to revive negotiations after diplomatic efforts lost steam amid the escalation of the Iran conflict. Recent US proposals have also included a possible halt to attacks on energy infrastructure and the reopening of the Black Sea grain corridor.
Zelenskyy asks for help from China
Zelensky also said on Friday that he had asked Trump to encourage Chinese President Xi Jinping to use Beijing’s influence over Moscow to end the war.
Zelenskyy said he has yet to hear back from the White House on Trump’s talks with Xi, but expects to hear more.
He also said he was ready to meet with Putin as part of efforts to end the conflict while continuing to seek additional US air defense support for Ukraine.
Major obstacles remain
Despite renewed diplomatic activity, central disagreements between Moscow and Kyiv remain unresolved, particularly over territory and security measures. Previous US-led efforts resulted in talks but a comprehensive peace agreement.
