US-Iran peace deal news LIVE: Iran’s government will collapse as a result of military campaign, Israeli PM Netanyahu says | Today’s news

US-Iran peace deal news LIVE: US President Donald Trump continued to warn Iran on Sunday, even as talks began in Switzerland between senior US and Iranian officials to implement an interim agreement reached last week to end the conflict.

The US delegation is led by Vice President JD Vance and its members are Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. The Iranian team is led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, with Pakistan and Qatar serving as mediators.

USA and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz

Tehran announced before the meeting that it had closed the Strait of Hormuz again, citing Israel’s ongoing military operations in Lebanon against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.

The aim of the interim agreement is to stop hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon. Iran has said the situation in Lebanon must be resolved before moving forward with broader discussions.

The United States maintains that commercial shipping continues to travel through the strategically important waterway. Trump also warned that the US could impose tolls on vessels using the Strait of Hormuz if a comprehensive deal with Iran is not finalized within 60 days.

Meeting between USA and Iran and Switzerland

Key issues on the agenda include releasing billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets and addressing the central issue behind the dispute – Iran’s nuclear program.

Officials involved in the negotiations expect discussions to continue through the night as they work to resolve these complex issues.

Negotiators seeking a deal to end the conflict in Iran are expected to continue talks overnight, according to a senior US diplomat involved in the negotiations.

The diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks, dismissed reports that Iran had withdrawn from the talks and confirmed that Iranian officials remained actively engaged, according to the AP. The diplomat added that much of the discussion focused on clarifying Iran’s recent remarks regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

The two sides also explored several mechanisms aimed at keeping the strategically important waterway open to international shipping and ensuring that the ceasefire in southern Lebanon is effectively implemented and maintained.

Oil prices are rising slightly

Meanwhile, oil prices rose slightly on Sunday as uncertainty persisted over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and gas supplies. U.S. crude gained nearly 3 percent to $78.70 a barrel, while Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose just over 1 percent to $81.70 a barrel.
