US-Iran News LIVE: Keep oil flowing, Trump says as Washington, Tehran sign deal to end war, reopen Hormuz | Today’s news
The United States and Iran have agreed to a peace deal and an “immediate and permanent” end to military operations on all fronts including Lebanon, signaling an apparent end to more than three months of war in the Middle East.
The initial announcement from Pakistan’s mediator was quickly confirmed by Washington and Tehran, and an official signing ceremony was scheduled for June 19 in Switzerland.
“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” US President Donald Trump wrote on social media Sunday to celebrate his 80th birthday.
“I hereby fully authorize the free opening of the Strait of Hormuz and at the same time hereby authorize the immediate lifting of the United States naval blockade.
“Ships of the world, start the engines. Let the oil flow!”
Soon after, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said in televised comments that the agreement meant an “immediate end” to the war between the countries and that they would hold talks within two months to seek a “final agreement”.
Just hours earlier, Tehran had vowed retaliation for Israel’s strike against Iran’s Hezbollah ally on the outskirts of Beirut, threatening to shelve the deal.
But later in the day, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said: “Both sides have declared an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.”
He added thanks to the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey for their support in the mediation effort.
