US President Donald Trump took aim at Stephen Colbert in his latest AI video, literally trashing The Late Show host just hours after CBS canceled The Late Show.
The show, which Colbert has hosted since 2015, was chastised after he mocked the broadcaster for a $16 million settlement with Trump for allegedly “malicious” editing of an interview with his Democratic presidential rival Kamala Harris.
The 22-second AI clip, reminiscent of CBS’ late-night set, showed Trump pushing Colbert into a large green trash can and closing the lid. He then celebrated with a happy dance and fist pumping while the audience applauded.
Trump released the video without further text amid his continued criticism of the late-night hosts.
Netizens were disgusted by the AI video post from Trump’s official social network, criticizing him for being “immature” and throwing tantrums.
“You have turned me and many other young Republicans against you. You are a liar. We will burn it all by voting Dems. You have no idea how many of us there are. We will burn it for everyone, EVERYONE will suffer! And we will smile. It’s up to you,” the social media user wrote.
Another user commented: “We’re broadcasting another boomer AI loser instead of fixing our broken fucking country. You really are useless.”
“How goddamn immature you are! The president who posted this! Like a goddamn grounded teenager throwing a tantrum because his video games are confiscated! You really are shallow, immature, immoral!” slammed the user. “You are a vile, toxic and terrible example to the children of the world. The brain and behavior of a monkey!”
“The President’s official account posts AI pictures when the country’s economy is in jeopardy. What a joke, man, what a joke,” wrote another disappointed user.
A netizen said, “Trust me. Stephen Colbert will have the last laugh.”
‘He was like dead’: Trump on Colbert
The US president has long been a fierce critic of late-night talk show hosts and their jabs at him. Trump called Colbert a “pathetic castaway” who should be “put to sleep.”
An hour after the late-night CBS series ended, Trump wrote on his Truth Social: “Colbert is finally done with CBS. Amazing he lasted this long! No talent, no ratings, no life.”
“He was like a dead man. You could take anyone off the street and they’d be better than this complete moron. Thank God he’s finally gone!” Trump added.
The show ended with Colbert jamming with Paul McCartney and former bandleader Jon Batiste on stage.
The day before the final episode of The Late Night aired, Trump was asked if he had a parting message for Colbert, but all he said was, “I’ll have a message later.” And he sure did!
“Big Fat Bribe”
CBS insisted that the decision to cancel “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” the time-slot leader, was purely financial and that it was a coincidence that the move came as CBS parent Paramount lobbied for government approval of its $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media.
In the weeks leading up to Thursday’s curtain call, the 62-year-old Colbert at times cut a subdued figure and lacked some of his usual jovial flair.
He told the audience Thursday that “we’re here to bring you news, and I don’t know about you, but I sure felt it.”
Colbert didn’t directly mention Trump on Thursday, instead using a recurring CGI wormhole gag as a metaphor for the president’s impact on American public life.
McCartney sang the Beatles’ mega-hit “Hello, Goodbye” to a large crowd at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theatre, where the Beatles performed in 1964 when they made their US debut.
“We thought America was just the land of the free, the greatest democracy. It was. Hopefully it still is,” he said, wagging a finger at Colbert.
There were portraits of actors Tim Meadows, Paul Rudd, Ryan Reynolds and Bryan Cranston.
