UKMTO says tanker attacked off Oman coast
UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Monday (local time) that an “unidentified projectile” hit a tanker off the coast of Oman in trade strikes by the US and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz. The maritime agency said it had “received several reports that a tanker… was hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz,” adding that the incident occurred eight nautical miles (15 kilometers) northeast of Lima, Oman.
IRGC targets US base in Kuwait
After Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the US-Iran conflict had escalated into a “full-scale war”, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said early Tuesday that it had targeted a US base in Kuwait with missiles. State media IRNA quoted an army public relations official as saying: “Army ground forces targeted the US terrorist army’s HIMARS missile systems located at the Arifjan base in Kuwait with surface-to-surface missiles.” He added: “HIMARS is a mobile missile system with the ability to move quickly against land targets, which, when aimed, causes damage to the offensive and defensive layers and reduces the missile power of the enemy in aggressive crimes.”
Trump said Iran would pay for the deaths of American soldiers
US President Donald Trump vowed on Monday (local time) that Iran would “pay” for the killing of three soldiers in Jordan, even as mediators push for a new ceasefire as the war in the Middle East widens. In a post on social media, he wrote: “Every time Iran kills an American soldier, they pay for that killing many times over!” His remarks came as the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the military launched the latest round of airstrikes at around 4:00 p.m. ET on Monday, the 10th straight day of attacks. Tehran earlier said mediators were in touch with proposals to ease hostilities after more than a week of worsening clashes. Tensions remain high and the conflict looked set to widen further after Tehran-backed Houthi militants in Yemen threatened to blockade Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea.
U.S. gas prices rose again to an average of $4 a gallon
US gas prices jumped back to an average of $4 a gallon on Monday (local time) after Washington’s latest standoff with Iran renewed tensions in the flow of fuel around the world. According to the AAA Motor Club, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is now just over $4. That’s about 13 cents more expensive than a week ago and much higher than where prices at the pump were at this time last year, when American drivers could fill up for an average of $3.14 a gallon.
