Several Trinamool Congress leaders followed Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and donated to the flood relief efforts in North Bengal after the party’s second highest leader donated ₹1 lakh to the state government.
Floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains ravaged Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and other districts of North Bengal on October 5, killing more than 30 people and leaving thousands homeless.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the region twice in the last two weeks and reviewed the reconstruction efforts to provide relief to the people affected by the natural calamity. The state government under Ms. Banerjee has asked for donations under the West Bengal Disaster Management Authority (WBSDMA) Fund for flood relief.
Responding to the chief minister’s call for help, the Diamond Harbor MP donated ₹1,000 for flood relief and urged everyone to rise to the occasion and help rebuild shattered lives.
“Unforeseen floods and landslides have devastated parts of the northern districts of West Bengal, bringing immense suffering and causing severe loss of life, livelihood and property…. In solidarity with the people of my state, I have contributed ₹ 1,00,000 to the WBSDMA fund. In these trying times, every act of kindness has gone a long way towards standing up for those who they lost the cause, so I appealed to them to take sides. this man-made tragedy,” Mr. Banerjee posted on social media.
After Mr. Banerjee donated ₹1,000, Trinamool leaders such as MPs like Mahua Moitra, Derek O’Brien, Ritabrata Banerjee and Prakash Chik Baraik contributed ₹1,00,000 to the relief fund. Party MPs announced their contribution on social media.
Others including MLAs Paresh Chandra Adhikary, Khokan Das, Nisith Kumar Malik also contributed to WBSDMA and posted information on social media.
The West Bengal government has also appointed a state-level task force for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction of flood-affected areas in North Bengal. The first meeting of the working group was held on Saturday (October 18), bringing together state government ministers and senior officials.
According to the state government in Darjeeling, 19 shelters for 640 people are in operation with continuous distribution of basic needs. “Over 200 damage assessment teams and 21 field camps are assisting in assessing damage to housing and infrastructure and reissuing documents,” a West Bengal statement said on Saturday.
