Officials of Abdullapurmet Police and Rachakonda Central Crime Station along with seized cash.
Three, including a minor, of an interstate burglary gang were arrested by the Rachakonda police for breaking into the Brilliant Engineering College in Batasingaram on October 9 and stealing ₹1.07 million collected as student fee.
A total of Rs 37.05 lakhs in stolen cash was recovered from the accused during a vehicle check conducted by the Abdullapurmet and Rachakonda Central Crime Station CCS (CCS) police teams at Kothaguda X roads.
The arrested have been identified as Raj Manohar Pawar, 22, a first-year BBA student from Gujarat, and Rithik Mohite, 24, a BA LLB student from Madhya Pradesh and a 16-year-old. Three other accused, identified as Dinesh Mohite, 27, Arun Mohite, 18 and Vilas Chohan, 22, are currently absconding.
Police recovered ₹16 lakh from Raj Manohar Pawar, ₹5.65 lakh and a mobile phone from Rithik Mohite and ₹15.40 lakh from a juvenile offender.
The case came to light following a complaint by the 61-year-old director of the institute, who returned the next morning, October 10, to find the office door and iron almirah broken. Based on his complaint, police teams were sent to Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka to track the culprits.
Investigations revealed that the accused were distant relatives who often met at family functions. Dinesh and Arun Mohite have previous records relating to property offences. They reportedly used Google Maps to identify isolated educational institutions near national highways and targeted them at night.
According to the police, the gang started their journey from Gujarat in the first week of October, traveled through Mumbai and Aurangabad and reached Hyderabad on October 9. After researching other colleges, they found Brilliant Engineering College in Batasingaram to be a good fit because of its remote location. They hid in the bushes till midnight and then broke into the administration block of the campus, took away ₹1.07 crore in cash and later divided it among themselves.
Efforts are underway to nab the remaining accused.
