Food and Civil Supplies Minister KH Muniyappa said on Thursday that there was no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders in the state and pointed out that the difficulty in supplying commercial cylinders would be resolved within a week.
He said Iran has allowed gas supplies to India through the Strait of Hormuz and two ships carrying LPG are on their way to Mumbai. The state currently has enough supplies for about 10 days, he added, promising that there would be no problem in supplying bottles to households.
He urged the public not to panic and stockpile bottles. “Some people are reserving and storing bottles unnecessarily out of fear. The government will ensure supply to consumers in a lawful manner,” he said.
The minister said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written a request to the Central Government for support to ensure smooth supply of LPG.
Responding to a discussion on the LPG shortage in the Legislative Council, the minister said the situation has arisen as a result of global supply disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict.
Based on his experience, the former Union minister said around 30% of India’s LPG was domestically produced while around 70% was imported. However, the LPG required for domestic consumption was largely produced domestically and therefore there would be no shortage of cooking gas for domestic use, he said.
Meeting with oil companies
Mr. Muniyappa added that he would hold a meeting with oil company officials on Friday to discuss ways to address the shortage of commercial pressure cylinders supplied to hotels and other establishments. After the meeting, the government would also consult with representatives of the hotel industry and inform the House of the measures taken.
He said the government has prioritized the supply of LPG to hospitals and schools to ensure that essential services are not affected. Steps will also be taken to ensure commercial supply of pressure cylinders for hotels and for functions in wedding halls, he added.
The minister warned that strict action would be taken against black marketing of LPG cylinders.
During the debate, Congress members including Ivan D’Souza and Nagaraj Yadav criticized the Center and held it responsible for the current situation.
