Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who also serves as chancellor of most state universities, has issued a strict directive to vice-chancellors to ensure that only those qualified as per University Grants Commission (UGC) norms are appointed as teachers in self-financing and other affiliated colleges.
UGC regulations stipulate a minimum qualification of National Eligibility Test (NET) or PhD for teachers. However, these qualifications are often not met for appointment to self-financing universities.
The Raj Bhavan, in its communication, also ordered steps to upload correct information about the qualifications of the appointed teachers on the college portals. The governor’s crackdown follows complaints about unqualified teachers marking students’ answer sheets.
