Telegram app to remain banned in India till June 22 ahead of NEET 2026 examination | Today’s news

On Tuesday, an official ban on messaging app Telegram was implemented in India. The temporary ban comes after direct recommendations from the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding paper leaks and cheating. The application remains suspended across the country till June 22 ahead of the upcoming NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination.

Invoking emergency provisions under Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) ordered the platform to adhere to strict restrictions within the stipulated tenure, according to an official statement by the NTA.

“Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued a notification under Section 69 A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 restricting access to the Telegram platform in India for a defined and limited period ending on June 22, 2026, covering the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination day and its immediate aftermath. A direction requiring that a message already sent be deactivated in India. the defined period ending June 30, 2026, which relates to a specific structural element through which the platform was used to produce post-event ‘paper leak’ evidence in terms of national controls,” the statement said.
