Supreme Court quashed all FIRs for NEET protesters; CJP to recall on September 5 | Today’s news
The Supreme Court on Tuesday quashed several First Information Reports (FIRs) registered by the police in Delhi, Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Assam in connection with the recent agitation led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) over academic issues, including alleged paper leaks, the Bar and Bench said. .
The cockroach Janata Party on Tuesday, September 1, also informed the Supreme Court that it has called off its planned protest march on September 5 following developments regarding the closure of FIRs filed against students who participated in protests over the NEET paper leak.
The Supreme Court quashed the FIRs against the protesters
According to a Bar and Bench report, a bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana invoked Article 142 of the Constitution to quash the criminal cases after the Central Government and respective governments filed applications to quash the cases.
What did the CJP say in the Supreme Court?
Co-convenor CJP Saurav Das appeared before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohan to inform the court about the decision.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta urged the apex court to use its powers to close all FIRs against NEET protesters between July 20 and July 25 across the country.
Mehta told the Supreme Court bench that the Center is determined to honor the assurance given to the CJP leaders and provide compensation to the families of the students who ended their lives after the cancellation of the NEET exam.
Mehta told the court that he would pay compensation to the families of the students who died and sought three months to work out terms.
The CJP has called a protest march in Delhi on September 5, Teachers’ Day. She accused the Center of reneging on promises made on July 25 to convince the group to call off its 36-day agitation against examination irregularities and NEET paper leak.
According to the CJP, the march was to be led by the families of students who committed suicide after the cancellation of the NEET exam and subsequent re-examination and also those who were allegedly subjected to police excesses during the July agitation.
