The Kerala State Human Rights Commission on Friday called for strict action against police officers who force accused to wear only underwear in detention stations.
The direction was issued by the President of the Commission, Alexander Thomas.
The panel directed the state police president to ensure that the officers follow the directives of the police headquarters in this regard.
The action was taken on a complaint filed by a native of Thiruvananthapuram, RG Leninraj, who alleged that forcing the accused to wear only underwear in their sleeping bags was a violation of their human and fundamental rights.
The Commission also received a report from the ADGP (Law and Order) in this regard.
According to the report, the police directorate has issued instructions that the policemen should not violate the human and fundamental rights of the accused and warned of strict disciplinary action for any act contrary to this.
