Suicide by woman at Guntur grievance redressal sparks panic
Tension prevailed in Guntur Collectorate on Monday after a young woman allegedly attempted suicide during the Public Grievance Redressal System (PGRS). The incident assumed significance when Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad was present at the spot to review the grievance redressal proceedings.
According to officials, a 26-year-old unmarried woman allegedly consumed pesticides in the Collectorate premises, triggering panic among officials and the public. Authorities immediately shifted her to the Government General Hospital in Guntur for treatment, where her condition is said to be stable.
According to preliminary information, the woman took an extreme step after protracted family disputes connected with a property matter. She was reportedly upset over what she claimed was a lack of justice in the case handled by the Nallapad police station. In her petition, she allegedly held her father and some of his relatives responsible for her situation, saying they should be held accountable if anything were to happen to her. She further claimed that a relative working as a constable was influencing the proceedings.
Speaking to The Hindu, Guntur District Collector CM Sai Kanth Varma said that the issue is not related to any government matter and is essentially legal in nature.
Meanwhile, Guntur Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal said the women’s mother had registered a case of dowry harassment, domestic violence and extramarital affair against the father in 2020. He added that the case is currently being handled by the district court.
The circumstances of the event are further investigated by the police and regional authorities.
