After years of neglect, Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has now started work to set up transfer stations in all assembly constituencies. While three are already operational, civil works at the other four stations are nearing completion, according to documents accessed by The Hindu.
Karee Gowda, Managing Director, BSWML, said that land has been identified at 23 locations and work will start soon. It follows from the documents that construction is to begin at 15 sites, while the remaining eight sites still need to take over land from the original owners.
“We plan to commission all the stations within a year. A reserve of one or two months can be considered,” Gowda told The Hindu.
The documents show that the funding is provided through the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 as well as civil societies. Several stations will also receive funds from the NCAP allocation of the 15th Finance Commission.
The documents further show that the sites identified range from 0.8 to 1.2 acres. In north Bengaluru, one of the identified sites near Attur is spread over four acres. Each station is likely to have the capacity to process 200 to 250 tons of waste each day.
Not enough?
However, V. Ramprasad, a solid waste management expert, claimed that the proposed capacity would not be enough to handle Bengaluru’s waste, though he welcomed the initiative as a positive step.
“For the entire assembly constituency, which may contain 10 to 13 wards, one transfer station will not be enough. BSWML has to do micro-level planning and set up smaller centers to make the system effective,” he said.
Bengaluru currently has 5,200 garbage dump trucks, which means one transfer station would have to handle around 173 dump trucks. These tippers also make more than one collection every day. As a practical matter, therefore, the proposed stations will have to be supported by an additional action plan, Mr. Ramprasad said.
