Mushfiqur Rahim is set for a sleepless night after finishing the first day unbeaten on 99, leading Bangladesh to 292 for 4 at stumps in the Mirpur Test against Ireland. Playing his 100th Test – the first Bangladeshi to reach the milestone – Mushfiqur agonizingly fell one run short of the historic hundred and was denied the chance to complete it when the umpires withdrew the bails after completing 90 overs on the day.
The Bogra-born veteran, who has also played 274 ODIs and 102 T20Is, now has the opportunity to become only the 12th batsman in Test history to score a century in his 100th match as he resumes his innings on the morning of Day 2.
The day started with emotions and ceremonies. Before the game, Mushfiqur was honored in a special presentation where former Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar Sumon, who handed him his first Test cap in 2005, presented him with his 100th cap.
Bangladesh vs Ireland 2nd Test Day 1 Highlights
The moment symbolized his remarkable longevity and contribution to Bangladesh cricket and drew warm applause from players, officials and the Mirpur crowd. Few achievements carry the weight of a century of Test appearances and the chance to crown it with a hundred makes the milestone even more special.
MUSHFIQUR, MOMINUL STEADY BANGLADESH
Opting to bat first, Bangladesh built their innings on steady partnerships but had to contend with a disciplined Ireland attack. Andy McBrine was the standout performer, producing a tireless 26-over spell to claim 4 for 82. He accounted for Shadman Islam (35), Mahmudul Hasan Joy (34) and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (8) before breaking a key partnership by dismissing Mominul Haque for a well-worked 63.
Despite all the ups and downs, Mushfiqur remained the anchor and produced an innings defined by patience, impeccable judgment and trademark resilience. His 187-ball knock included five boundaries, but more importantly, he showed his ability to absorb pressure and lead the innings forward. Litton Das provided strong support from the other end and remained unbeaten on 47 as the pair added valuable runs in the last over.
With Bangladesh in the lead and Mushfiqur just one run away from carving his name into an exclusive club, the anticipation will be immense when play resumes at 9:00 am on Day 2. For now, Mirpur – and perhaps the entire cricketing world – will wait impatiently as Mushfiqur prepares for one of the most important knocks of his career.
