‘Simon Go Back’, then ‘Sir Go Back’ in the coming days, says Revanth
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy drew a parallel between the agitation against the 1928 Simon Commission and the ongoing controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and said a similar nationwide movement could emerge against the exercise in the coming days.
Addressing a conclave in New Delhi on ‘India’s Next Chapter’, Mr Revanth said, “Just as the country is uniting under the slogan ‘Simon Go Back’, it will be uniting under the slogan ‘Sir Go Back’ in the coming days,” adding that leaders including Mamata Banerjee, Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray could unite on the Uddhava Stalin issue.
The Chief Minister alleged that decisions regarding electoral rolls were centralized with the Election Commission and alleged that artificial intelligence was used in the process.
Attack on Center over Telangana projects
Mr. Revanth Reddy also accused the Union government of not extending the same cooperation to Telangana that he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi got from the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh when Mr. Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
He claimed that files related to regional ring road, metro rail expansion and other projects are pending with the Centre. He also claimed that investment opportunities, including the semiconductor project, are shifting towards Gujarat.
“This is not a north-versus-south issue; it becomes Gujarat versus the rest of the country,” he said.
On delimitation, Mr. Revanth argued that southern states could lose political representation if Lok Sabha seats were redistributed primarily on the basis of population. He also criticized what he described as the concentration of key portfolios of the Union government in the northern states and argued that the southern states needed adequate political representation.
On social security schemes, Mr. Revanth Reddy defended the guarantees of the Congress government in Telangana and said that political parties cannot ignore welfare while competing with each other. At the same time, he said governments need to balance spending on social security with funds needed for development.
