Local election polls in Kerala recorded a voter turnout of 58.81%

Voter turnout was 58.81% in the polls held in 38 local bodies in the state on Monday, according to state election commissioner N. Seshadrinathan.

The counting of polled votes will begin across several centers on Tuesday at 10 am. The results, which are eagerly awaited as this by-election is the first after the United Democratic Front (UDF) came to power in the state in May, are available on the TREND link on the commission’s website www.sec.kerala.gov.in.

A total of 1,82,160 voters exercised their right to vote. This included 98,090 women and 84,070 men.

Top vote

Local body wards in Kannur district recorded the highest number of surveys (84.55%), while those in Kottayam recorded the lowest number (54.25%). Of the two corporation constituencies that saw by-polls, Ayyappankavu in Kochi Corporation recorded a voter turnout of 46.91% and Kuttichira in Kozhikode Corporation recorded 54.36%.

A total of 126 candidates were in the fray. The 38 local body wards — in 12 districts — included two corporation wards, three municipal wards, three district panchayat wards, seven block panchayat wards and 23 grama panchayat wards.
