New Zealand secured a hard-fought five-wicket win over West Indies in the rain-affected second ODI in Napier on Wednesday to seal an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. After the match was reduced to 248 in 34 overs due to persistent rain, the hosts crossed the line with three balls to spare, completing back-to-back victories and eclipsing Shai Hope’s magnificent unbeaten 109, an innings that equaled Brian Lara’s West Indies record of 19 ODI hundreds.
New Zealand’s chase was anchored by a commanding 106 opening stand between Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. Conway played a fluent 90 off 84 balls, studded with 13 fours, while Ravindra added a lively 56 off 46 to give the hosts the perfect platform.
New Zealand vs West Indies 2nd ODI Highlights
Although the home side stumbled briefly with the quick dismissals of Will Young (11) and Mark Chapman (0), the innings regained momentum thanks to Tom Latham and skipper Mitchell Santner. Latham’s unbeaten 39 off 29 and Santner’s explosive 34* off 15 saw New Zealand reach 248 for five in 33.3 overs.
SHAI HOPE STANDS TALL
Earlier, West Indies struggled after opting to bat first, losing wickets in groups and slipping to 86 for five inside 16 overs. But Hope held the innings together with remarkable composure and strength. He reached his fifty off 42 balls before accelerating spectacularly to reach his hundred off just 66 deliveries.
His final score, an unbeaten 109 off 69 balls with 13 fours and four sixes, was a master class in controlled aggression. Short contributions from Justin Greaves (22), Romario Shepherd (22) and Matthew Forde (21) helped lift West Indies to a competitive 247 for nine.
New Zealand’s bowlers shared the spoils with Nathan Smith taking figures of 4/42. Kyle Jamieson (3/44) and Mitchell Santner (1/35) also played a key role in restricting the visitors.
While Hope’s record century was a standout moment, West Indies were once again frustrated by their inability to defend a strong unit. New Zealand, on the other hand, showed depth, composure and superb finishing to end the series with a match to spare.
The teams now head into the final ODI where West Indies will try to salvage some pride and New Zealand will aim for a clinical 3-0 scoreline.
