‘Selectors will do whatever it takes’: BCCI secretary on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s India chances

Can he find a place in the squad for the upcoming T20I against Ireland?These questions have dominated discussions ever since the teenage sensation hit the cricketing world. Sooryavanshi played a key role in India’s U-19 World Cup triumph, smashing a record 175 off just 80 balls as India secured a record sixth title. He carried this stunning form into IPL 2026, amassing 776 runs in 16 matches at a stunning strike rate of 237.31. The youngster also smashed the tournament record of 72 sixes.The 15-year-old earned widespread praise for his fearless batting against some of the world’s top bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Kagiso Rabada and Pat Cummins.His remarkable exploits have fueled growing calls for his inclusion in the top national side, with many believing he should be swiftly included in India’s squad for the upcoming tour of Ireland. India are scheduled to play two T20Is against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and June 28.BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia praised Sooryavanshi’s extraordinary rise and expressed confidence that his performances will not go unnoticed by the selectors.“Vaibhav is the new prodigy in Indian cricket and I am sure he will take the world by storm in the coming days. And all our selectors are part of the IPL tournament. All, all the selectors follow these matches very closely and in most cases they are also present at the venue,” Saikia told Hindustan Times.“So in the upcoming selection meetings for the Indian team’s trip to the UK, I am sure the selectors will do whatever is necessary and in his best interest, given the way he has been performing,” he said.
What aspect of Sooryavanshi’s acting do you think makes it special?
“Many other players have performed extremely well. But Vaibhav is special and I am very happy that God is kind that a new prodigy has been introduced to the Indian cricket scene at this stage and he will definitely cross the line very soon,” added Saikia.After the Ireland series, India will travel to England for a white-ball tour comprising five T20Is and three ODIs.
