PM Modi’s Birthday: From RSS Worker to Third Term Prime Minister – Tracing His Political Journey and Rise of BJP | Today’s news
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was born in 1959 in the Gujarati city of Vadnagar to a middle-class Hindu family with no political background.
On 9 June 2024, Modi was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India for a third consecutive term, achieving only Jawaharlal Nehru in front of him.

Modi became the longest serving continuously elected Prime Minister of India on 10 June 2026 when he completed 4,399 consecutive days in office. Modi thus surpassed Jawaharlal Nehru’s continuous post-election continuous tenure 4,398 days (from 1952 to 1964).
Modi who started his political career as a member Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), was the face of the landmark Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) victory in the last three general elections. RSS is the ideological source of BJP.
Modi turns 76 today, here’s a look at his journey from a humble RSS worker to becoming India’s prime minister three times in a row.
September 17, 1950: Narendra Damodardas Modithird of six children, born in Vadnagar, Gujarat.
1965- An Indo-Pakistani war breaks out over Jammu and Kashmir. Modi serves tea at Vadnagar railway station
1971- Modi joins RSS. He participates Janasangh satyagraha in Delhi under the leadership of BJP veteran late Atal Bihari Vajpayee to enlist in the battlefield during the Bangladesh war.
1974- Modi participates in protests against the economic crisis in Gujarat.
1975- Modi is appointed General Secretary of Gujarat Lok Sangarsh Samiti – an RSS commission coordinating the opposition to the Emergency in Gujarat. Soon RSS will be disabled. Modi was forced to go underground in Gujarat and often traveled in disguise to avoid arrest, once dressing as a monk and once as a Sikh.
1978- Modi becomes RSS sambhag pracharak (regional organizer) overseeing activities in Surat and Vadodara.
1980- BJP is established.

1988- Modi is appointed as the general secretary of the Gujarat BJP.
1995- BJP wins 121 out of 182 seats in Gujarat Assembly. Modi became general secretary of BJP.
October 7, 2001- Keshubhai Patel resigns as Gujarat CM due to earthquake. Modi replaces Patel as CM.
February 24, 2002: Modi won the Gujarat Assembly polls from Rajkot II constituency, defeating Congress’s Ashwin Mehta.
February 2002- Riots break out after the Godhra incident. Over 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed. Modi has faced local and international criticism for not doing enough as CM to quell the riots.
April 2002- Modi tenders his resignation at a national meeting of BJP executives in Goa, but it was not accepted.
December 22, 2002- Modi sworn in for second term as Gujarat CM.
2005- US Department of State denies Modi a travel visa for religious “intolerance”, sparking uproar in India.
July 2007 – Modi has completed 2,063 consecutive days as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, making him the longest serving holder of the post.
2007- BJP is winning in Gujarat Assembly with 117 seats. Modi becomes CM for the third time.
December 2012- Modi wins fourth consecutive term as Chief Minister of Gujarat. BJP wins 115 out of 182 seats.
January 7, 2013- European Union ambassadors had lunch with Modi at the residence of the German ambassador in New Delhi. The lunch marked the end of the decade-old informal boycott of Modi.
June 9, 2013- Modi is manufactured as BJP Candidate for Prime Minister for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

2014- BJP wins majority with 282 seats in Lok Sabha polls. Modi wins from Vadodra and Varanasi.
May 18, 2014- US lifts decade-old visa ban on Modi President Obama invites him to Washington
May 26, 2014 – Modi was sworn in as the 14th Prime Minister of India after a landslide victory for the BJP.
September 25, 2015 – The BJP government is launching a ‘Make in India’ campaign promoting India as the most preferred global manufacturing destination.
October 2, 2014- PM Modi launches Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, India’s biggest cleanliness drive Mahatma Gandhi150th birth anniversary.
2015- Digital India campaign has been launched to make government services available electronically through improved online connectivity.
November 8, 2016 – Prime Minister Modi declares this in a televised address to the nation ₹500 a ₹There will be 1000 notes demonized with immediate effect.
June 1, 2017 – A goods and services tax is introduced. GST replaces federal and state taxes.
February 14, 2029 – As many as 40 CRPF jawans were killed in the terror attack in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. Jaish-e-Mohammad claims responsibility for the attack. Modi ordered an attack on the Balakot terror camp in Pakistan ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
May 30, 2019- Modi leads the BJP to another victory in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. Modi is sworn in as Prime Minister for a second term.
August 1, 2019 – Triple Talaq Bill passed parliament. The law criminalizes the practice of instant divorce among Muslims.
August 5, 2019- Modi’s government scrapped Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Opposition leaders including Omar Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah and Mehboob Mufti were under house arrest. Internet and mobile communication suspended for months.
November 9, 2019- The Supreme Court ordered the Government of India to form a trust for the construction of the Ram Mandir at the disputed site in Ayodhya. The land will now be owned by the Government of India and subsequently transferred to the Trust after its creation.
December 11, 2019- Lok Sabha approves Law on Change of Citizenship(CAA), granting civil rights to persecuted religious minorities, excluding Muslims. Protests took place across the country.
February 2020 –53 people kicking riots in Northeast Delhi. Riots broke out over CAA
June 15, 2020- Violent clashes erupt between Indian and Chinese forces in the LAC in the Galwan Valley, killing at least 20 Indian soldiers.
September 20, 2020- Parliament passed three agricultural laws. Farmers from Punjab and Haryana are marching in Delhi demanding repeal of these laws
June 10, 2021 – India’s death toll from COVID-19 has reached 6,148 in a single day in the second wave of the pandemic. SC withdraws center for oxygen deficiency in hospitals.
July 8, 2021 – This is revealed by an independent investigation by many media outlets Israeli spyware Pegasus was used to target 300 Indian phone numbers, including those of journalists and opposition leaders.
November 9, 2021 – Prime Minister Modi has announced that the government will repeal the controversial farm laws.
June 24, 2022 – Supreme Court dismisses ‘larger conspiracy’ charge by ZAKIA Jafri, widow of Congress leader Ehsan Jafri, who was killed in 2002 Gujarat riots, against former prime minister Narendra Modme and 60 others.
September. 2023- The 18th G20 Summit was successfully held at the Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi on 9-10 September 2023. It was the culmination of all the G20 processes and meetings held throughout the year among ministers, senior officials and civil societies.
January 22, 2024- PM Modi inaugurates Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.
June 4, 2024 – Modi wins third term but BJP loses majority in Lok Sabha for first time in a decade. BJP gets 240 seats, short of the 272 majority mark. A coalition government comprising NDA allies is preparing to form the government.
June 9, 2024- Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term, a feat only achieved by Jawaharlal Nehru before him.
July 2024: Implementation of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam from July 1, 2024 to replace the colonial era criminal jurisprudence.
