Monsoon session of Parliament likely from July 20 for three weeks | Today’s news
The monsoon session of Parliament is likely to begin from July 20 and is expected to last for three weeks, officials said on June 30, according to news agency PTI.
The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) has yet to take a final decision, the news agency said.
Monsoon and winter sessions usually have 20 sessions spread over four weeks. However, there are precedents for shorter sessions.
West Bengal and Assam win
The monsoon session comes after the ruling BJP’s victories in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry. Insurgency in TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT) will also take place in the upcoming session.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s decision is awaited on the demands of 20 TMC MPs and six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs seeking recognition as separate groups.
In the Rajya Sabha, after the newly elected and re-elected MPs were sworn in, the political numbers further tilted in favor of the ruling NDA.
The last session ended in disappointment for the government as a constitutional amendment bill to introduce reservation for women in legislatures in 2029 and increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha was defeated in the House of Commons.
The government is now reworking the bill to possibly uniformly increase Lok Sabha seats in all states by 50 percent.
Population-related seat growth has been a major issue for southern parties.
Cabinet Reshuffle also on the cards
The parliamentary session comes amid speculation about the possible reorganization in the Council of Ministers in Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led the union government. The move is likely to be announced before the start of the monsoon session of Parliament later this month, news agency PTI said in an earlier report.
For several days now, there have been indications from the highest levels of the ruling dispensation that the exercise could be carried out any time from now. Sources familiar with the negotiations told the news agency that the reorganization in trade union council of ministers will take place simultaneously with the announcement of the new BJP team under its president Nitin Nabinthe agency said.
