Panathur Road in East Bengaluru was finally reopened for traffic after more than 40 days on Monday, decongesting a portion of the HAL Airport Road.
The road closure caused major traffic jams and extended the rush hour on HAL Airport Road by almost an hour as more than half of Panathur Road commuters shifted to this route, according to Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP).
A police officer from the HAL Airport Traffic Police Station told The Hindu that many commuters were still using alternative routes without knowing that the road had been reopened. However, traffic gradually shifted back to Panathur Road during the evening rush hour.
The civic association completed the bleaching in the first week of November and asked the police for a 15-day period to cure it. Citing the already delayed work and heavy traffic diversion, the BTP gave only 10 days to cure and resumed vehicular movement on Panathur Road from Monday.
Originally scheduled to reopen on November 1, the date was pushed back several times as BWSSB and BESCOM work delayed the white paint project. The road also sparked a war of letters between the Bengal Traffic Police and the East City Corporation, as reported by The Hindu earlier.
