NEET paper leak: Supreme Court quashes NTA, says no lessons learned despite several directions | Today’s news
The Supreme Court on Monday (May 25) recalled the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the NEET entrance exams, over the 2026 paper leak, saying the agency has yet to learn its lessons despite multiple directions. The court also asked the NTA to file a compliance affidavit before the court-appointed monitoring committee on the 2024 NEET paper leak issue by Thursday, May 28.
The court said, “We also direct K. Radhakrishnan, appointed chairman of the monitoring committee, to file an affidavit confirming compliance with the court’s directions. List the matter on Thursday.”
“It is sad that they did not learn about the NEET paper leak despite several directions,” the Supreme Court said on the plea against the NTA.
It also asked the Centre, NTA and CBI to respond to requests to replace the testing agency with a strong and autonomous body for conducting medical entrance examinations.
The NEET paper leak petition was heard by Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe.
The Supreme Court also directed that a copy of the petitions be served on Advocate General Tushar Mehta, among other parties.
The court said: “The matter also came before this court earlier. There was a committee, a monitoring committee, which made some recommendations and they were accepted. We want the NTA to file an affidavit on the steps it has taken to implement the recommendations suggested by the committee.”
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), which filed the suit, urged the Supreme Court to directly restructure or replace the NTA, citing repeated paper leaks.
The Undergraduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) conducted on May 3 by the NTA for admission to medical education programs was canceled on May 12 due to allegations of a paper leak, which is now being investigated by the CBI.
