Maulana Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed, former Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) and president of the influential socio-religious organization Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, passed away early on Sunday. He was 78.
According to the Jamiat, Maulana Hafiz Peer Shabbir is survived by his wife, six sons and a daughter. He died after a short illness. He was also a member of the aamilah (central working committee) of the organization.
Maulana Hafiz Peer Shabbir served as the Chairman of the State Haj Committee in undivided Andhra Pradesh and served as a member of the Legislative Council since 2009. Funeral prayers were held at Kanz-ul-Uloom Markaz Masjid in Shaheen Nagar and he was laid to rest with state honors at Risala Khursheerabad Jah Jah.
In the run-up to the 2023 elections, the Jamiat expanded its support to the Congress, especially in districts outside Hyderabad.
